The Consortium is an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to being a resource for its members, government officials, private sector executives (both for profit and not for profit), educators and other interested parties. We will support reasoned dialogue but take no institutional position and will not serve as an advocacy organization.
Carol Van Cleef, Chief Instigator
Carol Van Cleef is a Washington DC based FinTech attorney and strategist with broad experience advising clients on electronic payments and digital and virtual currency related legal and regulatory issues for more than two decades. She regularly provides legal, regulatory and strategic advice to numerous clients throughout the fintech space and in the cryptocurrency ecosphere. Her clients include software developers and creators of cryptocurrencies, exchanges, banks, hedge funds among others. She regularly advises established fintech companies and other companies on deploying blockchain or distributed ledger technologies.
Carol counsels clients on banking regulatory issues, state money transmitter licensing, anti-money laundering compliance, sanctions, consumer protection (including Regulation E and unfair, deceptive and abusive practices) and related privacy and data security. She is a Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist and speaks and writes frequently on virtual currencies, blockchain, and AML compliance issues. She created the AML Compliance Bootcamp and partnered with the Conference of State Bank Supervisors in delivering it to regulators in more than 45 state. More recently she launched the well-regarded AML Compliance Bootcamps for Virtual Currency related businesses.
Carol is a graduate of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and earned her JD at American University’s Washington College of Law and is executive director of the Cambridge Crypto Compliance Consortium, a global organization established to facilitate a robust dialogue among compliance professionals on the unique compliance challenges presented by the technology.
